According to Japanese mythology " when Amaterasu hid herself in the huge rock (cave) called "Ama-no-iwato", the world turned darkness." There are several places in Japan having the "Ama-no-iwato" legend. I know is in Miyazaki. I never heard in this place.
"Ama-no-iwato" of Ise is located middle part of Ise Peninsula, about 20 minutes by car from Ise-town. "Torii" built beside the dam lake (above picture); show the entrance of "Iwato". |
About 5 minutes walk from the parking area, we reach "Ama-no-iwato". It was a much smaller cave (height is under 80cm) than I expected. Clear water was flowing out from the cave. I never think that Amaterasu hid herself in this narrow cave, but I respect the legend. |
Auxiliary sanctuary Izawa-no-miya is located at Isobe-cho, central part of Ise Peninsula. This is dedicated to the spirit of "Amaterasu-Omikami". Women diver and fishermen come here to pray. |
