A ruler who had command of a waterway would also rule over the Orang Laut or sea nomads who inhabited the area.
Here, the sea-nomads are seen going about their daily lives.

Arrival of Sir Raffles, 1819

Sir Stamford Raffles and Major William Farquhar landed in Singapore on 29 January 1819 and met the local chieftain, Temenggong Abdul Rahman.@
Raffles wanted to setablish a trading post on the island for the England East India Company (EIC).

Meeting of First Parliament, 1965
|
On 9 August 1965, Singapore was separated from Malaysia and become independent. The first parliament was opened on 8 December 1965.@
You will notice that the right side of the chamber is empty. This is becouse the only opposition in Parliament, the Barisan Socialis, boycotted the first Parliamentary session.
